Growing up in a family with
six sisters and a selfless, compassionate mother shaped my life beyond measure.
I am forever grateful for their support, encouragement, and friendship. During
my time as an undergraduate at Temple University I had the great fortune to
meet my wife Deanna. She has been a constant source of love and inspiration. It
has been the honor of my life to partner with her in raising our strong,
confident, and caring daughter Lauren. I am enormously proud of the woman she
has become. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">I encourage you to use the occasion of Women’s History Month
to recognize, celebrate, and thank the women in your life. Without doubt, there
are influential women from family members to friends, teachers, professors,
caregivers and countless other roles who have helped you become the person you
are today. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">This year’s official theme for Women’s History Month is
“Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.” At Commonwealth
University, we have many exceptional women working to promote and advance these
ideals. I am grateful for the work they do every day in service to our students
and our communities. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">Women throughout history have been indefatigable champions
for equality and fairness. Let us be reminded of their brave spirits as we
continue the good work they started to ensure that our places of learning, working,
and living are warm, welcoming, and open to all. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">Inspirational leader and changemaker Malala Yousafzai said,
“I raise up my voice—not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice
can be heard…We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.” To our
students, I say keep raising your voice in support of your future and those
around you. Use it to lift up the women in your life and look for ways to promote
diversity, equity, and inclusion in all that you do. You have the power to
challenge and change the status quo—just as so many women before have done. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">Finally, as we celebrate Women’s History Month take a moment
to reflect on the women who have made a difference in your life and those who
have made a difference in the world. Think about the courage and compassion
they have shown in their support for you and through their efforts to make the
world a little more kind and welcoming. Let’s challenge ourselves to follow
their example and act with both courage and kindness. And remember that courage
looks different for all of us. In the words of writer Mary Anne Radmacher,
“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end
of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow.” </span><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">Bashar W. Luther King, Jr.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">As we near the end of Black History Month, I find myself
reflecting on the words of several champions of equality. Dr. King was a
pioneer of the civil rights movement and a proponent of kindness, empathy, and
social justice.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He believed these
qualities when pursued together would make our world a more openhearted, fair,
and equitable place for all people to pursue their dreams. That was, after all,
Dr. King’s central message—that all people should have the right to dream and the
freedom to work toward the fulfillment of such dreams. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">I am so proud of the efforts of so many passionate Commonwealth University colleagues who embody Dr. King’s message and
are continually doing what is right for our students and our community. Over
the past month, close to two dozen Black History Month events have taken place across
all CU locations. From “Lunch and Learn” events to movie nights, day trips, and
speakers, our students have had the opportunity to engage in a wide-ranging
offering of events designed to expand their knowledge, understanding, and
appreciation for Black History. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">The 2024 Sankofa Conference, hosted by the Bloomsburg
Multicultural Center, saw students from all CU locations come together to learn
more about the rich cultural heritage of people of African descent. Sankofa has
long provided a forum for unity and understanding among students. It is heartening
to see students from diverse backgrounds come together with a genuine desire to
improve their own understanding and thereby begin to foster change in their own
lives and communities.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><b>Students from across CU's locations came together for the 2024 Sankofa Conference </b></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Dy0rPKVPddrT1MBtSzmUN7J-TE9L9LuSdZE8phcbPNBjeQd1DPUK8z6FAhrCApMHq4D7wOgZPDrDmTlwwU6oreOEhYfc_XdqOmu6PTXGgjEhVWbkXKt0aI1YSDKSucJSI4_8zlnifHNzfFQTdc-rq_OKJeCVkBuuFXqtoaMf15J0ZQxClu5FWSf6eajN/s800/53536999688_64c60eb3d9_c.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="519" data-original-width="800" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Dy0rPKVPddrT1MBtSzmUN7J-TE9L9LuSdZE8phcbPNBjeQd1DPUK8z6FAhrCApMHq4D7wOgZPDrDmTlwwU6oreOEhYfc_XdqOmu6PTXGgjEhVWbkXKt0aI1YSDKSucJSI4_8zlnifHNzfFQTdc-rq_OKJeCVkBuuFXqtoaMf15J0ZQxClu5FWSf6eajN/w320-h208/53536999688_64c60eb3d9_c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKzJkFwMaDQLxfH6twqupzgkh6SJbT3oCnSQgdL11Zan6qHDuKkHjhX8c99XDs7UNfpCXsi1SqywIdTvpKStPsCFL88gQLKBPOHtoqiNuhCHyJGWRVHpuCxGWikHKIpLv07JXZupvwUmqGPVXLiwz_N4yWKfkygTM9PynNrGMqXlI2v-RD2U-mwoCiKCUX/s799/53537010803_40f7b6d56f_c.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="533" data-original-width="799" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKzJkFwMaDQLxfH6twqupzgkh6SJbT3oCnSQgdL11Zan6qHDuKkHjhX8c99XDs7UNfpCXsi1SqywIdTvpKStPsCFL88gQLKBPOHtoqiNuhCHyJGWRVHpuCxGWikHKIpLv07JXZupvwUmqGPVXLiwz_N4yWKfkygTM9PynNrGMqXlI2v-RD2U-mwoCiKCUX/s320/53537010803_40f7b6d56f_c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyx9-G7gu-WT_3KddWhItlKrujan2XSJyBDVdO0-Gi6bna2Apjs-tK8YBVDsS57bvivmccPa7uVAKAmUasO8_6ZrllIVgvvCUWJdXNMisqediVHHqt9JZw5YUCn7ebhzgRLbWEjK655nut_aJdldTUFUCFH-tc3SvGRpPeNFMWHWiOZrgxdX0yyeIxTrNg/s799/53537252875_810964ac1b_c.jpg"><img border="0" data-original-height="533" data-original-width="799" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyx9-G7gu-WT_3KddWhItlKrujan2XSJyBDVdO0-Gi6bna2Apjs-tK8YBVDsS57bvivmccPa7uVAKAmUasO8_6ZrllIVgvvCUWJdXNMisqediVHHqt9JZw5YUCn7ebhzgRLbWEjK655nut_aJdldTUFUCFH-tc3SvGRpPeNFMWHWiOZrgxdX0yyeIxTrNg/s320/53537252875_810964ac1b_c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Sankofa is a tremendous example of what is possible when we strive
to live by Dr. King’s principles—to endeavor to do what is right and to bring
people along on that journey with us. I want to thank our CU students, staff, and faculty for their heartfelt efforts in celebration and recognition of Black
History Month. I truly believe that the work we are doing together is making an
impact, both in our campus communities and the communities they call home. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Maya Angelou said, “We may encounter defeats, but we must
not be defeated.” Progress does not mean perfection and though there may be
times when it feels like every step we take forward leads to two steps back, I
encourage you to remember the words of Ms. Angelou. When you encounter defeats
or experience hardships, when the world is less than kind and injustice seems
to prevail, take heart in knowing that you are surrounded by people who care
about you and share your values. Take heart in the words and lessons of leaders
like Dr. King who kept pushing forward no matter what. And he did so with the
support of good, and kind, and caring people who saw the world the same way he
did—for all its beauty, possibility and flaws. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">As Black History Month comes to an end, my hope is that you
will take its lessons and inspiration with you and work to make positive
changes through your words and actions. It is truly amazing what can be
accomplished when we all make small steps together in the same direction. </span><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Bashar W. holidays and winter are fast approaching. With the changing of the seasons
comes the opportunity to reflect and acknowledge the accomplishments of the
past year while giving thanks for the remarkable team at Commonwealth
University that has made it all possible.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">Reflecting on this past year fills me with pride and
gratitude for our Commonwealth University family. Together, we continue to work
every day toward providing students a life-changing education. I am continually
inspired by the classroom stories about everything our students are doing,
learning, and achieving together. Great achievements are happening at
Commonwealth U thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff who hold our students
as their first priority. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="font-family: arial;">It is easy to get caught up in the “busyness” of our life
and work—to keep pushing and striving to achieve the next goal, submit the next
assignment, complete the next project. This tight focus and striving often
prevents us from taking a step back and recognizing how far we have come and
all we have accomplished. </span><span style="font-family: arial;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2NZ0ViESritbC-zO_0EycV0p5i072A3PpSMMWZsOdK8lEyHqKAl9yotPf5um6KAk79-H3H3btW88XzIFxQ7-NnECk8j6NeoKFMo2_P5jPkuJZhe3F9kVbZuP6mKaPoEDzAVTGol-wRZxOKsieFhjKebb9Ie2uGHs04gb7ZulwCRFP_joFMC7dx33vvWfd/s2400/DSC_0010240Fall240.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="2400" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2NZ0ViESritbC-zO_0EycV0p5i072A3PpSMMWZsOdK8lEyHqKAl9yotPf5um6KAk79-H3H3btW88XzIFxQ7-NnECk8j6NeoKFMo2_P5jPkuJZhe3F9kVbZuP6mKaPoEDzAVTGol-wRZxOKsieFhjKebb9Ie2uGHs04gb7ZulwCRFP_joFMC7dx33vvWfd/w345-h230/DSC_0010240Fall240.JPG" width="345" /></span></a></div><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">As we enter this season of gratitude and thanksgiving, I
encourage you to do just that. Take time to consider the strides you have made
in your life, your work and your pursuits over the past year. Perhaps this year
marked monumental change in your life, moving away from home, beginning a new
journey, taking on a challenge that, at the time, seemed insurmountable.
Perhaps this year brings you closer to the accomplishment of major goals and
milestones. Whatever situation you are in, I urge you to be gracious with
yourself—to look back on the achievement of both the big and small goals with
pride. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">This time of the semester can be challenging as we look to
finish strong and complete our end-of- semester tasks and assignments. Taking
time to connect and socialize can be difficult this time of year given the
expectations we place upon ourselves and the impending rush of the holiday
season. I encourage you to reach out for the help and support of your family,
friends, professors, and staff. During times of stress and anxiety, it is
important to look to one another for support. As a Commonwealth University
family, we care about one another. So, let’s protect one another and take time
for the things that matter most this time of year. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span>I encourage each of us, as we endeavor to end the semester
strong and tackle our holiday responsibilities, to prioritize time for
reflection, self-care, and gratitude. Don’t be afraid to take a break. Go for a
walk, call a friend you haven’t talked to in months, have lunch with a coworker
or classmate. Tell someone how much their friendship or encouragement has meant
to you over the past few months. We are all at our best when we’re surrounded
by people we care about and doing the small things that lift our spirits and
fill our hearts with gratitude. That is my hope for all of us as we enter this
holiday season. </span><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial;">Bashar W. Effectiveness, notes that, “CU engaged in a consultative, data-informed process
that identified priorities essential to delivering transformative educational
experiences that will be life-changing for our students. The plan emphasizes
having a culture that embraces change and an inclusive environment that
celebrates diversity of thought and intellectual inquisitiveness. Work to
operationalize the plan currently ensues as all divisions and units have
defined actions that will mark definitive progress toward the achievement of
key measures of success and excellence.”</span><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: times; font-size: medium;">“Now that we have a dynamic plan, the most important
part lies ahead of us to bring our institutional priorities to life,”
shares Assistant Provost Amy Osborne. She says, “The plan is bold and
simple, which will allow us to execute with focus and speed. There is so
much we are already doing, but the plan intentionally embraces innovation from
the experts across all levels of our new institution. It will be exciting
to see everyone emerge and engage.” <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: times; font-size: medium;">Dr. John Bodenman, Professor of Environmental, Geographical
and Geological Sciences, acknowledges the challenges Commonwealth University
has faced in its early stages, but also recognizes the significant achievement
in launching our first strategic plan. He says, “For many of us, aspects of integration have
certainly been challenging and difficult, but most surprising to me was how
well the students, faculty, staff, coaches, administration, and alumni
representatives from each of our four campuses--serving alongside our partners
at Blue Beyond—were able to come together as a Committee and create a strategic
plan for Commonwealth University that reflects input from our many stakeholder
groups--a truly unique experience, and a pleasant surprise indeed!” <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: times; font-size: medium;">Witnessing our university community work through the process
of developing a strategic plan and now beginning to bring it to life through
dynamic and impactful initiatives has affirmed my belief in the strength and
heart of our Commonwealth University family. I look forward to continuing this
important journey together in service to our students as we work to ensure a
promising future for them. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p>

launch of a partnership with Google for a public-private partnership enabling our
students to earn industry-recognized certificates during their regular
undergraduate degree programs. The program will prepare students for careers in
the fields of cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing/e-commerce,
business intelligence, IT support, project management, and user experience (UX)
design.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Partnerships like this continue our foundational mission to
expand the opportunities available to both our students and the people in the
communities our campuses call home. Inaccessibility to education often stands
as a barrier for individuals looking to upskill and reskill and earn relevant
credentials that today’s employers need. I am pleased that this program will
address the critical access issue in a way that offers real-world skills in the
most relevant and rapidly growing fields. <o:p></o:p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3bf55oYh6wxnriaG8HWZzGXeyc6x3ihLvEeevlaHSPeyNBdlVgdNYsvPt0suPQ2N0RKzGnElguB7UuEJ5PWngGTk-JNBJQ6iP2w9t52cWbdOp6uK_YbItfckaNlD_NY8uWglp_jCWocsypwIcpP3vq7NT0e_KOz2N65g61P8zkhLZKIa6ZXhT9t3Liz0M/s2048/Google%20Announcement.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1366" data-original-width="2048" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3bf55oYh6wxnriaG8HWZzGXeyc6x3ihLvEeevlaHSPeyNBdlVgdNYsvPt0suPQ2N0RKzGnElguB7UuEJ5PWngGTk-JNBJQ6iP2w9t52cWbdOp6uK_YbItfckaNlD_NY8uWglp_jCWocsypwIcpP3vq7NT0e_KOz2N65g61P8zkhLZKIa6ZXhT9t3Liz0M/w371-h247/Google%20Announcement.jpg" width="371" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span face="Barlow, helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: #f0f2f2; font-size: 16px; text-align: start;">Cynthia Shapira, PASSHE Board of Governors chairwoman</span></td></tr></tbody></table><p class="MsoNormal">Google developed its Google Career Certificates specifically
for in-demand fields. Numerous Pennsylvania-based companies are part of Google’s
employer consortium, including Bayer, CMI Media Group, SAP, Expedient, and The
Project Management Institute. Other employer consortium members include
Deloitte, Walmart, Verizon, and, of course, Google. All provide input
into the skills and competencies their employees need, and those are
incorporated into the training. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Most
university students work to pay for their education while in college. These
credentials help students start jobs while still in school. The training
can be offered through workforce development on a non-credit basis. Certificate
programs offer more options and opportunities to earn skills and acquire
education. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Earning certificates can help
people enter high-growth jobs and continue earning more advanced credentials or
enroll in the university to pursue associate and bachelor’s degrees. When
paired with a degree, certificates add value and often increase entry-level
salaries. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">So far in the U.S., more than 200,000 people have graduated
from Google’s program. Of those, the vast majority have reported a positive
career impact such as higher pay, a promotion, or a new job. Earning
certificates in high-demand fields adds value to a degree. A study done in 2022
by Strada Outcomes Survey showed that history majors who acquire data analysis
skills increase their entry-level salary by 38%. Sociology majors who acquire
UX/UI design skills increase their entry-level salary by 32%. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">These results are why we are so eager to provide this
opportunity to our students. By embracing a student-first mentality and collaborating
with employers to bring initiatives like the Google partnership to Commonwealth
University, we’re positioning our students for success in a rapidly evolving economic
landscape. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In addition to the Google Career Certificates, Commonwealth
University is pursuing many other workforce development initiatives across the
region. We have teamed up with Thrive International and UPMC to offer free courses
in English as a Second Language (ESL) at our Lock Haven location. Removing the
language barrier is the first step that unlocks the promise of education for
many students, as it did for me. This leads to employment and enables degrees. Our
evening classes are reaching some 50 area students. In the spring, Commonwealth
U students in our ESL certificate program will volunteer as part of their field
experience. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We have partnered with Career and Technology Centers across
the region to form 15 articulation agreements for career and educational
pathways into Commonwealth U’s Criminal Justice and Early Childhood Education
programs. This fall we are welcoming new students in these two areas. With
the success of this program, we are working toward additional pathways in
business. Over the past year, our <span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Public
Safety Training Institute has grown the total number of training and contact
hours by more than 70%. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I am excited about the work taking place in Workforce
Development and what it means for our students and our communities. When we
work together to find opportunities and entry points to education that make
learning accessible, we improve the lives of those around us and help to ensure
a more vibrant living, learning, and working environment. <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Read more about the Google Partnership here: <a href="https://www.commonwealthu.edu/news/commonwealth-university-launch-partnership-google">https://www.commonwealthu.edu/news/commonwealth-university-launch-partnership-google</a></p><p></p><p><br /></p>

</p><p class="MsoNormal">Earlier this month, I had the privilege of presiding over
Commonwealth University’s commencement ceremonies. Over two days, three
campuses, and four ceremonies 1,775 graduates walked across the stage to
receive their diplomas and begin the next stage of their lives. I am so
incredibly proud of the commitment, perseverance, and heart they have shown in
earning their degrees. During my remarks to the class of 2023, I shared a
favorite quote by Nelson Mandela. He said, “Education is the most powerful
weapon which you can use to the change the world.”</p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Our Commonwealth University graduates have the power to do
just that. They are a class of world changers and difference makers, willing to
work hard, sacrifice, and give back to others. They have overcome much in their
journey to a degree. The pandemic marked their academic experience and tested
their resolve and resilience. But they did not give up. Surrounded by a caring
community of friends, family, professors, and staff, they found the strength to
keep going and achieve more than they may have thought possible.<br /><br /></p><p></p><p class="MsoNormal">In his address to the Lock Haven graduates, 2023 graduate
and student trustee Justin White shared, “Here we are, ready to take on the
world, to pursue our dreams, and to make a difference. We may have different
paths ahead of us, but we share one thing in common: the determination to
succeed.” Justin’s sentiments captured the spirit of this year’s class of
Huskies, Mounties, and Bald Eagles; they are a group of ambitious and
determined, strong and selfless, caring and creative individuals who are poised
to make a difference in everything they do. <br /><br /></p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">My message for the graduating class of 2023, whether you are
graduating from high school, college, or have earned an advanced degree is to
focus first on the strength of your character and success will follow. As I
shared with our Commonwealth U graduates, character is something that you
develop over time. Character is built through your experiences, your
relationships, and your choices. As you go through life, make choices that will
strengthen your character. Choose to be honest, even when it is hard. Choose to
be kind, even when it is not reciprocated. Choose to be responsible, even when
it is inconvenient. Make choices and stand up for what you believe in, even in
the face of adversity. Your unique character is what will guide you through
life’s journey. It will set you apart and make you successful in all aspects of
your lives. Embrace the choices you make today, for they shape the person you
become tomorrow. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Class of 2023, the world needs you and your potential to be
extraordinary. I am proud of you. I believe in you. I can’t wait to see all the
good you will do for the world. Congratulations!<br /><br /><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqMXCy8n9m8MQmdTremjF9KGgEahX5ien9Rx7iDrbbKn6-wJzxpn3nlUaVPeAOMoQxfmDQPTwTG_gF44VMP3zA2LVqN_ktwck77TWHcECRZZtGGq88KxyBGKVVTHF_JKRkafR4U5JQovPhblfTn8ukwUEzqqKnkxm7m251Kj3J61voJQA2aHPK4FohLA/s2048/Comm234.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqMXCy8n9m8MQmdTremjF9KGgEahX5ien9Rx7iDrbbKn6-wJzxpn3nlUaVPeAOMoQxfmDQPTwTG_gF44VMP3zA2LVqN_ktwck77TWHcECRZZtGGq88KxyBGKVVTHF_JKRkafR4U5JQovPhblfTn8ukwUEzqqKnkxm7m251Kj3J61voJQA2aHPK4FohLA/s320/Comm234.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />Mansfield Graduation </p><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX0HurGPGAE_5ZoHCodGwlbWHs836WdxxmLMA7xS98iVPAvWnoEpWSSbAKGfIRcUE8CiDFTMkClUfwsFwZHpwlzOilPIqoKwHF3tLnxgkxQgMXMpfRZDPDFs-LB-ntxfprfIM-QeCamIEhy1FDL3d2bX_Eq1r96vN7HXLln3c6IAYJxxhR6gVpXzSN7Q/s2452/comm238.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1636" data-original-width="2452" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX0HurGPGAE_5ZoHCodGwlbWHs836WdxxmLMA7xS98iVPAvWnoEpWSSbAKGfIRcUE8CiDFTMkClUfwsFwZHpwlzOilPIqoKwHF3tLnxgkxQgMXMpfRZDPDFs-LB-ntxfprfIM-QeCamIEhy1FDL3d2bX_Eq1r96vN7HXLln3c6IAYJxxhR6gVpXzSN7Q/s320/comm238.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />Lock Haven Graduation <br /><br /></div><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div style="text-align: center;"> <o:p></o:p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmCbuw5uY_usQ0BYtsOT7HDSuPD9pvptMlQ4iH-WVDyM-wFEAmzu5gsEML7GAsSqy0l7fmbueGpeiwSM3qVPXa8gtYT4Q46QXCoaVY2zvGFaBryJ6pNuWUfwEkiHTjm4_h0j6shrxb2B4nRTjIKs-_OdviymkZhfoEXEjyoBhoAIF7uAryASzvyt0H8g/s1200/spring-graduation-23_306.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="1200" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmCbuw5uY_usQ0BYtsOT7HDSuPD9pvptMlQ4iH-WVDyM-wFEAmzu5gsEML7GAsSqy0l7fmbueGpeiwSM3qVPXa8gtYT4Q46QXCoaVY2zvGFaBryJ6pNuWUfwEkiHTjm4_h0j6shrxb2B4nRTjIKs-_OdviymkZhfoEXEjyoBhoAIF7uAryASzvyt0H8g/s320/spring-graduation-23_306.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> Bloomsburg Graduation </div><p></p><div><br /></div><br /><p></p>Bashar W. </p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”
These words from Helen Keller epitomize the events taking place across our
campuses as we launch into the spring season and the final weeks of the
semester. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">Spring is a time for growth, and it’s been in full bloom
these last few weeks as we’ve all enjoyed the warmth and sunshine the season
has brought. Earlier this month, students at Bloomsburg and Lock Haven participated
in The Big Event—a campus-wide day of service focused on sending student
volunteers out into the community to complete service projects. I’m incredibly
proud of the selflessness exhibited by our students and their willingness to
give back to the communities our campuses call home. Over 1,000 students took
part in The Big Event, making a big impact on the towns of Bloomsburg and Lock
Haven. At Mansfield, students rallied together through the annual Paddy Murphy
fundraiser to raise $10,000 for a local teacher battling cancer. The campus also hosted Relay for Life this month. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"></span></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1800" data-original-width="2400" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg5gLt0Tb2LudH8RrrnYmzXnDU1spCHqxOV5RBa1NAbFQeGhgK9stcMePBfYgbgfAnXfQCBdEAhdBmSjmoUieBWzzOFodgX9nYxlLIZMmBcNarFoZaJxGipFSDsiecmfIsdC2-mK-xtuOqdEbeXYkuls4_gHBNfz8Co2syDC9smFX_NTvJ8L1SrLgJ3CA=w354-h266" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="354" /></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bloomsburg students at the start of the Big Event </td></tr></tbody></table><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;"><br /><br /></span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhpWKtW2b5u2mFdfTPf1NBxOjcgCDFL8jT08Az5JWO_SmpP2Gro7BieAyTz0fpD--wOEVAyyy1vd_55TOtSqXH1aJ8fZJFlHLnZ4-c_dcs2amSrC5AFWkTL2rSmctdAFXdh_T7cJ2Bopa5VRlWDZKYLpSOXI5ir5khnv6HSgS5LrrkIMwSZnEgMBHp5mA" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span style="font-family: georgia;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhpWKtW2b5u2mFdfTPf1NBxOjcgCDFL8jT08Az5JWO_SmpP2Gro7BieAyTz0fpD--wOEVAyyy1vd_55TOtSqXH1aJ8fZJFlHLnZ4-c_dcs2amSrC5AFWkTL2rSmctdAFXdh_T7cJ2Bopa5VRlWDZKYLpSOXI5ir5khnv6HSgS5LrrkIMwSZnEgMBHp5mA=w362-h272" width="362" /></span></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: georgia;">Lock Haven students filled Jared Boxes during the Big Event </span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p>

time of the semester when many priorities compete for our students’ time and
attention, it’s inspiring to witness them take a step back to give back. I’m
always incredibly proud of our students and their dedication to excelling
academically. Our campuses are filled with future leaders who will go on to
achieve great things and contribute to their communities in meaningful ways. I
have always believed that effective leadership is rooted in servant leadership,
which is why it’s so heartening to see our students embracing these principles.
Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by
what we give.” Our students are living this truth by doing work that matters,
both in and out of the classroom. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">We know that our students carry these values with them long
after their days on campus. The generosity of our alumni prove it year after
year. April has been a month of giving for our proud alumni and supporters as
well. They are supporting our students in big ways through the All In Days of
Giving, which took place earlier this month and raised over $375,000. These
gifts make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students and support
valuable initiatives that lead directly to enhanced learning experiences and
outcomes for our students. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">Growth. Giving Back. In so many ways, this is what the
college experience is all about. I often speak about our number one priority at
Commonwealth University—student success. As president, it’s incredibly
rewarding to see our students grow as individuals in their four years here.
It’s even more rewarding to know that the students who came before them are
instilling the value of giving back—demonstrating the truest measure of
success. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: georgia; font-size: medium;">Thank you, sincerely, to every student and supporter for the
generosity of spirit and selflessness you have demonstrated this month. Your
actions have made a difference in the lives of others! </span><o:p></o:p></p><br /><p>

health. It leads to fatigue, irritability, and decreased motivation. Mental
stress can be particularly challenging for students. </span><a name="OLE_LINK2" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Burnout
can lead to diminished </a><span style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">academic performance. As we reach the midpoint in
the semester, it’s important to recognize the signs of burnout and implement
strategies to overcome it.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Some of the damaging effects of experiencing mental and emotional
exhaustion for students include: </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.25in;"></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Decreased engagement in course material and
activities</span></li><li><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Difficulty concentrating and focusing on tasks</span></li><li><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Feelings of isolation and loneliness</span></li><li><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Increased stress and anxiety levels</span></li><li><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Loss of motivation and enthusiasm for learning</span></li><li><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Decreased self-esteem and confidence</span></li></ul><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">
</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Juggling your studies with other commitments and responsibilities is
challenging, but with the right strategies, you can manage your workload and
stay motivated. The following tips may help you manage and stay focused:</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">1. Take a Break</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Regular breaks from the demands of school can reduce stress and give
the brain a chance to reset. Moreover, taking a break can help prevent
procrastination, as it helps you feel refreshed and ready to tackle your
work. <br /><br /></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">2. Get Enough Sleep</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Sleep is vital for both physical and mental health. It helps to
restore energy levels, regulate hormones, and improve concentration. Studies
have shown that people who get enough sleep are more productive and have better
overall health. Lack of sleep can lead to various health problems, such as
depression, anxiety, and obesity. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">3. Establish a Consistent Sleep Schedule</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">You'll feel more rested and energized during the day if you keep to a
regular sleep schedule. It can help regulate your body's biological clock,
which is vital for overall health. Additionally, as your body becomes used to
the same routine each night, you can start falling asleep more quickly and
easily.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">4. Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol </span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Keeping caffeine and alcohol out of your system before bed can improve
sleep quality. As a stimulant, caffeine raises alertness and energy levels,
making it more difficult for you to unwind and sleep.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Alcohol, on the other hand, can make you feel sleepy at first but also
interfere with your sleep later in the night. It's best to avoid caffeine and
alcohol before bed because they can disrupt REM sleep, which is necessary for
restorative sleep.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">5. Exercise</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Physical activity is an effective way of managing stress and anxiety.
Exercise reduces stress levels and increases endorphins, helping to improve
mood and energy levels. Plus, regular exercise can also help enhance sleep
quality and increase focus and concentration. Moreover, it can reduce anxiety
and depression, both common symptoms of burnout and stress. Find a friend and
take an exercise study break. Even a quick walk on campus can provide numerous
benefits. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">6. Ask for Help When Needed</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Whether it's from your instructors or peers, getting help can be
invaluable in helping you stay on track with your studies. Seeking help can
provide you with the support and resources you need to manage stress and
burnout. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">7. Prioritize Tasks</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Achieving success requires efficient time and task management and
prioritization. With the proper focus on your most important tasks, you can
stay organized and motivated.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Taking the time to prioritize your tasks is the key to staying
organized and reducing stress. It'll help you stay focused on the tasks that
matter most and have the highest impact. Knowing which projects to tackle first
will help you feel more in control and ensure timely completion of your goals.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">8. Set Deadlines</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Sticking to deadlines is essential for staying on track and achieving
your goals. Setting deadlines, helps you avoid procrastination. Doing this will
help you become more productive and accelerate your progress toward success.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">9. Take It Step by Step</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Breaking projects into smaller, achievable pieces is the best way to
keep stress levels low and stay organized. When you tackle tasks bit by bit,
it's easier to reach your goals and experience the satisfaction of getting
closer to them every step of the way.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Conclusion </span></b><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Burnout is a common challenge among students, and it can affect
academic performance. My hope for all Commonwealth U students is that by
understanding and recognizing the signs of burnout and exhaustion, you can use
these tips to care for yourself and keep your workload manageable while giving
your all to your coursework.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Georgia",serif; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">As we move into this second half of the semester, remember to take
regular breaks, break down tasks into more manageable chunks, and take care of
your physical and mental health. With the right strategies, you can stay
motivated, productive, and successful in your studies and life. Wishing you all
the best! <o:p></o:p></span></p>

first semester always ushers in a season of reflection and thankfulness. As I
reflect on the past year and consider all that was accomplished, I am most
grateful for my colleagues across Commonwealth University. Our mission is only
possible because of so many dedicated individuals working toward the same
goal—improving and increasing opportunities for our students.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">And so, in this season of thankfulness, I am filled with
appreciation and gratitude for the people that make Commonwealth University
run, day in and day out. Wonderful things are happening in Bloomsburg, Lock
Haven, and Mansfield as a result. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">At Mansfield, <a href="https://munews.mansfield.edu/?p=4124">student

she plans to use to continue her research on pancreatic cancer under the

Worldwide during the month of October, people
show their support and raise awareness for individuals affected by Breast
Cancer.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This year, the National Breast Cancer Foundation embraces
the theme RISE, or Rally in Screening Everyone to encourage and ensure that
every individual has access to life saving screenings and support. Currently,
breast cancer represents 15% of all new cancer cases in the US. Due to early
detection, breast cancer fatality rates have decreased by 40% since 1986, which
is why it’s so important to continue to raise awareness for screening and early
detection. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Across our campuses, our students and campus communities demonstrate
their support for Breast Cancer Awareness through a number of events and
fundraising opportunities. Athletic teams across the campuses held Pink Out
events to support the cause, giving attendees opportunities to donate, don pink
ribbons, and receive information about Breast Cancer awareness month. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Zeta Tau Alpha at Lock Haven organized a Pink Week filled
with activities aimed at raising awareness and support for those affected by
Breast Cancer. The group took their advocacy to the local community with a
Spike Out Breast Cancer Volleyball game at nearby Central Mountain High School
to pass out pink ribbons and collect donations. <o:p></o:p><p></p>

Month. This is a time to come together as a community to acknowledge and
recognize the importance of raising awareness around this important issue. As a
community that cares about one another, we can all play a role in supporting
each other. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">At this time in the semester, things can begin to feel
overwhelming. I encourage you, despite the pressure of rigorous academic work,
to prioritize your mental health and wellbeing and be gracious with yourself.
Be sure you are making time to spend time with friends and family, and doing
things you enjoy. We are at our best when we are fully ourselves and grounded
in our relationships and connection to others. Even when things seem difficult
or isolating, you are never alone. Your university family cares deeply about
you and your future. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">As a community, it’s important to be there for others and to
watch for signs of friends, students, colleagues, and classmates who may be
struggling. Many suicides can be prevented by caring individuals who recognize
the red flags: <o:p></o:p></p>

away, those of us in higher education see this time of year as a new beginning.
Our students have returned to campus, and the air has filled with equal parts
excitement and anticipation. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">For our new students, this is the beginning of a life-changing
journey. No other transition in life is as transformative as the start of a
collegiate career. Remarkable opportunities await and I urge our students to
make the most of them. For our returning students, arriving back on campus
should feel like a homecoming. They are being reunited with friends,
professors, and valued staff members as they move ever closer to their goal of
graduating. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">That goal of graduation rests at the heart of our mission as
educators. I’m encouraged to witness the trajectory we’re taking in Pennsylvania
in support of our students and their future success. This is a historic time
for public higher education in Pennsylvania. The past few months have seen both
a first-of-its-kind integration of public institutions and record investment by
the legislature in our state-owned universities. The <a href="https://www.passhe.edu/News/Pages/Releases.aspx?q=2022-7-8-PASSHE-statement-on-state-budget">unprecedented
16% increase in the State System’s appropriation</a> signifies the state’s
support of the power and promise of public higher education in Pennsylvania. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We at Commonwealth University are paving the way for bold
ideas and collaborations as we embark on a new path that unites three historic
institutions—Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield. Individually, these schools
carry storied legacies of educating students, serving their communities, and
preparing tomorrow’s leaders. Together, as Commonwealth University, we will
offer students increased access to a broader range of academic programs,
opportunities for experiential learning and research, keeping an eye to affordability,
while promising a high-quality education powered by high-impact practices.
Students graduating from Commonwealth University, many of whom stay and work in
the region, will be prepared to enter the workforce and make an immediate
impact in their careers and communities. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This season of new beginnings is brimming with possibility
and promise, and I hope that, like me, you’re eager to join the journey. <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Bashar W. For me, these emotions have been tripled by serving as the president of three universities.<p></p>
<p>On the one hand, we are happy to see the students we as educators have mentored and worked with for years <a href="https://www.bloomu.edu/news/bu-celebrates-commencement" target="_blank"><b>reach the pinnacle of their journey</b></a> and walk across the stage having earned a college degree. They have forever changed the trajectory of their futures.</p>
<p>On the other hand, we are saddened by their departure as they will no longer be part of our daily life. We are left with the beautiful memories we shared in and out of the classroom, watching them mature into young adults with aspirations of greatness awaiting them in the world.</p>
<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKlRxYLyLxohxjd3cnO_uO8HzjNjJU9nhG2jeMb2RULEykBstXgm-KwYRmZQrIkdsAtM3-YvsYVyzPtA8dgrLAlZJMG2nn6mjM4Lu-QHiG_-ne9Nd3v2wegJrUJjTZXERArQ2ca-ZlrCooXMR1v0m0X_XIsURAA98pIbNTw9YyuHC-tjcyYBByadZapw/s1920/028A1308.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1528" data-original-width="1920" height="159" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKlRxYLyLxohxjd3cnO_uO8HzjNjJU9nhG2jeMb2RULEykBstXgm-KwYRmZQrIkdsAtM3-YvsYVyzPtA8dgrLAlZJMG2nn6mjM4Lu-QHiG_-ne9Nd3v2wegJrUJjTZXERArQ2ca-ZlrCooXMR1v0m0X_XIsURAA98pIbNTw9YyuHC-tjcyYBByadZapw/w200-h159/028A1308.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>At Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield, these students, now graduates, have become woven into the fabric of our collective university histories. They have taken their wide-eyed, curiosity-filled minds, worked hard, overcome adversity, excelled, and grown to new heights.<p></p>
<p>I wish that wherever life’s journey takes the class of 2022, they will never forget their time spent with us in Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, or Mansfield and fondly recall how they grew from teens to young adults and into contributing, productive members of our society.</p>
<p>Please enjoy a wonderful summer full of fun, joy, and laughter. All the best!</p>

The purpose of life is to give it away.” Over the past several months, our campuses have offered meaningful examples of Picasso’s words at work. Students from each campus have been out in the community lending a hand and giving their time and talents to help local organizations.</p>

<p>At Lock Haven, students recently partnered with Downtown Lock Haven to put together spring time activities for kids and assist in community clean-up efforts. Multiple athletic teams have also given their time to support local charities, schools, and churches.</p>
<p>Bloomsburg students recently participated in The Big Event, a CGA community service event that gives them the opportunity to help and assist businesses and residents of the Town of Bloomsburg with projects such as raking yards and cleaning up streets.</p>
<p>Mansfield student organizations, Greek life, and athletics programs have been giving back to their community in big ways this spring through volunteering in and around the Mansfield area.</p>
<p>Last week, all three campuses participated in an All-In Day of Giving. The 24-hour giving challenge is in its eighth year at Lock Haven, with Bloomsburg and Mansfield hosting inaugural events this year. I am humbled by the generosity of our donors who together gave more than $500,330 to support our students. Each gift will make a difference in the life of a student.</p>
<p>Giving comes in many forms. This month we’ve witnessed shining examples of what it means to give of oneself in support of others. Whether it’s time, talent, or treasure—every gift is meaningful and works powerfully in the life of our students and the people in our communities.</p>
<p>Thank you to our students and supporters for your continued generosity of spirit and selfless consideration of others.</p>

Television and social media bring us images of the horrors of war that inflict both physical and emotional trauma to Ukranians of all ages.</p>
<p>Please keep the Ukranian people and their loved ones abroad in your thoughts. Not knowing the fate of your loved ones is agonizing, especially when they are faced with such difficult choices—fleeing their homes as refuges, or staying behind to fight for their country and freedoms.</p>
<p>Television icon Fred Rogers said, “in times of crisis look for the helpers,” That sentiment rings especially true today. I think of the image of strollers left at a Polish train station for Ukranian refugees and their children. It’s an image of neighbors helping neighbors—helpers in action.</p>
<p>Leaving your home for a foreign land is not easy. When I left my native Syria to come to the United States it was incredibly difficult, but a decision that gave my family hope for a better future. Fortunately, I had a strong support system, including my teachers who helped me bridge the language barrier as I learned to speak English at age 10. I was blessed to find the helpers.
</p><p>In March we celebrate Women’s History Month. This year’s theme is “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.”</p>
<p>The theme represents the countless number of women, who as medical doctors, nurses, soldiers, counselors, clerics, teachers, and mothers worldwide, have stepped forward to provide healing throughout history and certainly during the ongoing global pandemic.</p>
<p>We’re also seeing that in Ukraine with female doctors taking care of the wounded, or the mothers who are desperate to protect their children and keep them out of harm’s way. We’ve seen teachers in underground shelters working to keep children safe and focus their attention on stories and learning while hoping the attacks will soon come to an end. We need to be eternally grateful for the sacrifices women around the globe have made for others. In story after story, they are the helpers. </p>

<br />
“Leadership does not need to be loud and kindness should never be interpreted as weakness. Lead quietly with kindness.”<br />
<br />
Our world needs more kindness. As the late General Colin Powell wrote in his book,<i> It Worked for Me</i>, "You can never err by treating everyone in the building with respect, thoughtfulness, and a kind word."<br />
<br />
Whether you find yourself in a leadership position today or aspire to lead others in the future — Let’s choose to lead with compassion, kindness and respect. It’s up to us to create and foster working environments that embody our values of inclusion, growth, and kindness.<br />
<br />
During the month of February, our nation celebrates Black History Month. Together we must continue to champion the diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to make our campuses more welcoming to our underserved populations.<br />
<br />
To that end, our campuses, along with our sibling PASSHE schools, are conducting the System-wide Campus Climate Survey which opened Jan. 31. The results will allow our campuses and the State System to assess ourselves and support the development of strategies to promote inclusive campus and system communities.<br />
<br />
If you are a student or employee of Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, or Mansfield please complete the survey. Your participation is important and anonymous.<br />
<br />
It is our goal to make our university families and communities open and welcoming to all.<br />
<br />
Frederick Douglass, one of the great Black scholars of the 19th century, penned many profound words on education. He underlined the importance of education as part of a process of realizing human potential, furthering justice, and achieving freedom: “Education …means emancipation,” he said. “It means light and liberty.”<br />
<br />
During Black History Month, I encourage you to engage one another with kindness, respect, and understanding. Let us take this opportunity to embody our values through our actions and bring light and liberty to those around us.<br />

While I have never been someone to make resolutions, I have spent some time looking for ways to become a better version of myself as a husband, father, brother, uncle, colleague, and leader. <br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiOnHmsSKikMc-Ct7mm5RXqBJWcsXW1rBol5RxTUmiO8HGHpz6fk2O67EOvmvL-nAp7midKmXvk-qqXO-SRSmcSIooSm-I2VBMmje5QZPcSyR-iFUS94_C00vmtQP8Diej_7V22qE1yW8NS2SvV3JvVY5MRhjUC-vV42A_MY_KySjMEY2H-BcA0_oDR8g=s1920" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="1920" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiOnHmsSKikMc-Ct7mm5RXqBJWcsXW1rBol5RxTUmiO8HGHpz6fk2O67EOvmvL-nAp7midKmXvk-qqXO-SRSmcSIooSm-I2VBMmje5QZPcSyR-iFUS94_C00vmtQP8Diej_7V22qE1yW8NS2SvV3JvVY5MRhjUC-vV42A_MY_KySjMEY2H-BcA0_oDR8g=w400-h266" width="400" /></a></div>Taking a step back, like an artist staring at a blank wall and reimagining who you are, is a healthy way to grow as a person. Whether that means creating good habits or committing to doing something to help others, it takes time and continuous effort to be the best you. So don't be afraid to challenge yourself in 2022. Together, we can make our community a shining example for others.<p></p>
<p>As our campuses spring back to life and we welcome students from the semester break, we move forward with enthusiasm immersed in the details of the integration of Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield. Each day walking through the doors of Carver Hall I am energized knowing our vision for the integrated university is taking shape, and the promise of an exemplary student experience remains our highest priority. The expansion of high-quality affordable educational opportunities for our students remains our steadfast commitment. </p><p> We're also looking forward to spring semester traditions that are the hallmark of maintaining vibrant campuses within our respective communities. And most importantly, we're changing the lives of students and their families forever. In short, we're reimagining public higher education for the coming decades!</p>

<p>So remember, a new year means a new blank canvas awaits to paint a new picture. Always remember, as Iva Ursano, a Canadian blogger, once wrote, 'You are the artist of your own life. Don't hand the paintbrush to anyone else.'</p>
<p>Go Huskies!</p>

This generous gift will allow us to create a state-of-the-art media center for students aspiring to achieve success in the fields of radio, video, podcasts, live streaming, as well as other areas of broadcasting and media. In recognition of the impact this gift will have on the University, BU will name the new facility the Kerby Confer Media Center.</p>
<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgy4r8pCh2OU-y365lH5uMlHhN2mleH4ZuEsH2iSMN3SomjuIsD_jR8ENA4GZkiJZpGJ5cgYC-AsqrdFTigrv7YvvZvgz2avQFDrJcO8oCjJJviI5nvnewFXV4UNraCRFQhOVKdyjv_7kItVWjHwsau9hECTpvMDHXooeTRBFGkDq06PvDiQjYQa6hETw=s360" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="240" data-original-width="360" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgy4r8pCh2OU-y365lH5uMlHhN2mleH4ZuEsH2iSMN3SomjuIsD_jR8ENA4GZkiJZpGJ5cgYC-AsqrdFTigrv7YvvZvgz2avQFDrJcO8oCjJJviI5nvnewFXV4UNraCRFQhOVKdyjv_7kItVWjHwsau9hECTpvMDHXooeTRBFGkDq06PvDiQjYQa6hETw=s320" width="320" /></a></div>A central focus of the Confer Media Center will be to prepare students to enter the radio and media industries. As Kerby said to our trustees after the gift was announced, “This will make north-central Pennsylvania the hub for media.” I can’t thank Kerby enough for his commitment and for helping us bring that vision to life.<p></p>
<p>Gifts such as this one from Kerby and Steph Pettit ’89 in 2019 help BU transform the lives of our students and their families for generations to come. While gifts of this magnitude are transformational, every gift is significant. Our most recent Giving Tuesday resulted in over $40,000 from 168 donors. Those donors included 26 current students whose $1,375 in contributions will be matched by me. Now, more than ever, the need is great for immediate use funds to support students in earning their BU degree. </p><p>On behalf of our students, a heartfelt thank you!</p>
<p>Speaking of the moments that can change a family’s direction for generations, last weekend, we held our Fall commencement ceremonies, in-person. It was wonderful to <a href="https://www.bloomu.edu/news/fall-2021-commencement-ceremonies-held" target="_blank"><b>celebrate this milestone event</b></a> with our students, their families and friends.</p>

<p>Now, as we near the end of 2021 and gather with those near and dear for the holidays, I send warm wishes for a season of joy.</p>
<p>May you stay healthy and safe and have time to relax, recharge, and get ready to usher in 2022!</p>

<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibZiMEShteiXCx_97Y92QtdN5wplQpQAJw0JO78XBJTf8pO92CNXGaxtck7_BEw-3fXTNYNqrsrEFRq63510b6V6opMQy9Tjik-NVY9YikjPpuU-TbrlDuy7zD7hfY_iLcK_YEq3TRiqgN/s1920/IMG_6792.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1246" data-original-width="1920" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibZiMEShteiXCx_97Y92QtdN5wplQpQAJw0JO78XBJTf8pO92CNXGaxtck7_BEw-3fXTNYNqrsrEFRq63510b6V6opMQy9Tjik-NVY9YikjPpuU-TbrlDuy7zD7hfY_iLcK_YEq3TRiqgN/w400-h260/IMG_6792.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>The month began with First Gen Week, a celebration of our students who are the first in their families to attend college. As a first generation student myself, I have walked in your shoes questioning whether or not if I belonged in college. But know that you are not alone in this journey at BU. There are resources on our campus to help you so don’t be afraid to raise a hand. Your destiny awaits if you stay the course and remain focused. This week I join with our campus community to honor and celebrate the more than 1,700 BU First Gen students who are set to be the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree.<p></p>
<p>We also celebrated Veterans Week to honor and recognize those who have served our country in the military. At BU we take great pride in our Military and Veterans Resource office which works to support our students as they pursue their educational goals. It was an honor to host the fourth annual luncheon for our faculty/staff/student veterans on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. In addition, our BU Student Veterans Association held its annual Suicide Awareness Walk on Friday, Nov. 12, at 8 a.m.</p>
<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrCL-qO5Kp4ytJNDAxPXHnlgRSuXB7vxvqlV4oGkqoWx0pqj4pjVQ-LuIkMiMygJXIuD89W9D9-fepeeJKNA43YikBWp57vFe_d7x2lm4C3ABsHsaIavCuC2CMJodKlhS7OtFTPqFO-np7/s1920/51685677762_22a70a6863_o.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1206" data-original-width="1920" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrCL-qO5Kp4ytJNDAxPXHnlgRSuXB7vxvqlV4oGkqoWx0pqj4pjVQ-LuIkMiMygJXIuD89W9D9-fepeeJKNA43YikBWp57vFe_d7x2lm4C3ABsHsaIavCuC2CMJodKlhS7OtFTPqFO-np7/s320/51685677762_22a70a6863_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Our final recognition week of the month was No Hate Week from Nov. 13-18. This year’s theme is “No More Silence.” As a campus, town, state, and nation, we must work to treat each other equally, fairly, and without fear. One of the most impactful programs during the week that serves as a bridge for our University and the community we call home is “Beyond the Fountain”, an annual Community Government Association (CGA) event, which was held on on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Kehr Union Ballroom. The week wrapped up on Thursday, Nov. 18, with “A Conversation with Albert Jones,” the chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion officer for Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield universities.<p></p>
<p>Finally, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! </p>

<p>We kicked off our celebrations earlier this month (Sept. 9) with a presentation by Javier Ávila, an author and professor whose work with students earned him the 2015 Pennsylvania Professor of the Year Award sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. </p><p>Professor Ávila offered a close examination of the American Latino experience and said, quite profoundly, that “we can never be free if we have to hide who we are.”</p>

You can learn more about those events by <a href="https://www.bloomu.edu/hispanic-heritage" target="_blank"><b>visiting our website</b></a>.<p></p>
<p>Finally, I want to thank our students and my colleagues who helped coordinate and took part in BU’s <a href="https://www.facebook.com/bloomsburgu/posts/10158325043606586?__tn__=-R"><b>9/11 Day of Remembrance</b></a> event earlier this month. </p><p>What a powerful tribute it was to hear from two members of the BU Family and proud alumnae: PA State Treasurer Stacy Garrity ’86 and Elizabeth Miller ’17. Our remembrance of Sept. 11 is especially important when one considers that many of our students are too young to remember the tragic events of that day. For this reason, it is ever important to honor the memory of those we lost and pay tribute to our first responders.</p>

It’s wonderful to have everyone back, and especially energizing to see our students back on campus. Welcome back to all our returning students, and a special welcome to our first-year and transfer students – I look forward to seeing you in the Commons and on the Quad.</p>
<p>To our faculty and staff, I thank all of you for your unwavering commitment to our students, and appreciate your perseverance in spite of the challenges we’ve encountered over the past 18 months. Special thanks to all our colleagues, CAs, and HOWLs who have been helping our newest students move in and get acquainted with the campus over the past couple weeks.</p>
<p>As you recently read, the health and safety of our campus community remains a high priority for us as we begin this semester. We continue to track the COVID-19 virus, and we have mandated masking indoors on campus because of the recent increase in positive cases in our county. I thank all of you for your cooperation in support of our commitment to conclude the semester as we begin it: in-person, and with a vibrant campus life and educational experience for all students.</p>

<p>I ask each of you to please wear a face covering of some sort while indoors, and please check our regular campus email announcements and<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://www.bloomu.edu/coronavirus" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">COVID-19 dashboard</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>for the latest updates. I remind all students that they will be automatically entered into our scholarship lottery upon providing proof of vaccination to our Student Health Center (SHC). Please visit the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://www.bloomu.edu/offices-directory/student-health-center" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">SHC webpage</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>for further information on the scholarship opportunities, COVID testing, and on-campus vaccine registration.</p>
<p>Best of luck to all our students as we commence this academic year together, and thanks again to all my colleagues for your hard work and dedication in support of our students.</p>
<p>Please continue to be safe, mask up, and GO HUSKIES!</p><p><span><span> </span>Bashar W. Hanna, President</span>
